Where to Purchase

Most of us can get water directly from our tap. You just need to make sure your water is chlorinated, or treat it with bleach before storing it. It all comes back to how much your want to spend on HOW to store it. You need to store 1 gallon of water per person, PER day, for 14 days. So if you have a family of 4 that is 56 gallons of water!

Low Cost or Homemade Options

  • You can store water in 2 liter soda pop bottles. It is very cheap - you just have to remember to save the bottle. I have a friend who sticks around after parties to collect the bottles. Make sure you store the water properly. Check out Food Storage Made Easy for recommendations on how much to store, and how to store it properly!

  1. Hey Andrea, I’m love all these sites with the the food storage fun group. I’m trying to do some research on where to buy a good 55 gallon water storage. Do I need to buy online? are there national retailers around -like a Home Depot? I know of some good stores in Utah, but I’m in Montana. Any suggestions would help. Thanks again for all your ideas!

  2. Erin,
I’m interested in storing water also. I have found a container that seems to be easier to use than the 55 gal barrels. It requires no siphons- it is gravity fed. The footprint of one unit takes less space than 2- 55 gal barrels but will store 250 gal. of water. (there is a 125 gal size also) so it is alot more space efficient!! We love it!!

  3. Hi!

Wendy Dewitt is a great speaker on canning meats and such, on her blog, http://everythingunderthesunblog.blogspot.com/ she has a great idea for storage for the big tubs of water with the plans to make it yourself! Very fun hope you like them too!

    Thanks

  4. Erin,
Would you mind sharing a website or more specific information on the water storage system you refer to?

    Thanx,

  5. If you are looking for good deals on 55 gallon water drums, you should check out Maceys when they have their case lot sale, I think it should be coming up soon. I bought mine last year for around $35.00. I can’t remember the exact price, but it was the cheapest I had seen them. Wal-Mart also has really good prices, and they will price match if you find them cheaper somewhere else. If you are out of state, you could try emergency essentials, I know they ship products, and will price match as well. I would call the store and see if you can price match Wal-Mart or Maceys. They might be willing to set up a shipment at the discounted price if you call the stores here in Utah directly. I hope this helps.
