Buy in Bulk!

Now that you have buckets to store some food storage items in, make sure you check out the prices of bulk items at your local LDS cannery or wholesale store. It is A LOT cheaper to buy items in bulk. If you know that you will be using a lot of the product, and do not want to store it long term - buy in bulk!

Here is a simple cost comparison for a couple items from the cannery:

Hard White Wheat -   Bulk - .30/lb          #10 Can  -  .56/lb

Beans (Black) -             Bulk - .68/lb          #10 Can - .96/lb

Sugar - Bulk -                Bulk - .56/lb          #10 Can -  .81/lb

Always remember to look at the price per lbs or oz. That is how you really know if you are getting a good deal. At the grocery store, they often do the work for you. Look closely at the price tags, and you will see the different prices per lbs/oz.

Don’t forget to check out your local Costco or SAMS club. They offer some great deals - and some not so great deals! Be educated, know if you are getting a good deal. I have found that yeast and cheese are almost always the cheapest at these wholesale stores.

What do you like to get at the cannery and wholesale stores? Let me know!

Happy Shopping!

I LOVE the Cannery. Did you know most canned items last 10-30 years…great for long term storage! But once you open them and use the plastic lids you can use smaller amounts than those huge 5 gallon buckets. I have found the #10 cans are easier to use long-term, easiery to store short-term and stay fresher longer…plus you don’t have any complicated dry-ice freezing process like you do for the 5 gallon buckets. Also if you buy bulk outside the cannery you can still go purchase cans, lids, oxygen absorbers from them and the best part is you can RENT FOR FREE a home canner and do it at home with your own stuff. We just converted all our 5 gallon buckets into cans and they store so much easier and the cute labels let me know when I bought it and what’s inside and I can stack them (in groups of 6) into boxes that they sell and store them under beds and in closets and anywhere…great for apartments and small spaces!

Jenny-I have to agree with you about storing the #10 cans. I love doing this as I feel that they don’t take up as much room and are easier to use, store, and heft around!

Andrea-I have never seen hard white wheat in bulk. Where can I find that? Thanks! :)

Kylene-The cannery sells white wheat in bulk for you to can at home or you can, can it there…also sometimes at Wal-Mart. Last fall I was able to get two 25 lb. bags for $7.00 each of hard white wheat. I think a friend of mine found some at Costco once and some health foods stores sell big bags of it if you ask. Hope this helps!
